I am really interested in how brains work! Which parts of the brain do what and where peoples brains are lacking integration will designate where they get stuck in life.
Reactions stem from the lower part of the brain, emotions stem from the right part of the brain. So people who tend to get defensive are all fired up in the lower right brain. Some people can see that it is indeed THEIR system that is in reaction, and they take responsibility for how they are interacting with life. But some people make it about others, saying ‘if that human hadn’t said or done that thing then I wouldn’t have to react this way’. That’s giving other people a lot of power over your well being! I’d prefer to be self aware and empowered.
The part of your awareness that can step back and see what’s happening is the upper part of the brain and the part that can put what’s occurring into words is the left brain. If you have any kind of self reflective process/practice then when the sting of emotion settles you will most likely diagonally switch where the brain is firing, and perhaps integrate into your awareness what triggered your lower right brain to take over your system in the first place.
If you are the type to hang out in the upper left brain, yes you can reflect, but you’ve also found a technique to help you distance yourself from feeling, which in chaotic moments is helpful because it will aid you to stay present to the situation at hand, but if you stay there through out the majority of your awake hours you are keeping love and life away from connecting to your emotional brain and therefor, your heart.
In many people I see the pattern of reaction to reflection, then they move into self judgement. Criticizing the self for having any reactions in the first place is a lower left brain activity and will most likely re-stimulate the lower right brain with shame and guilt and then you see how it can become a vicious segmented brain cycle, which is skipping the integration of the upper right brain, Compassion.
All of these functions of the brain are necessary. We need reactions to inform us of how to care for ourselves, eating when the body is hungry, sleeping when it is tired, responding to traffic to drive safe or simply navigating the aisles of a supermarket. We need consciousness for maturity, to explore intellect and connection to others, to grow as a person and as a society. There is no one part of the brain that is better than the other. We need it all, and we need it to be in harmony with the other pieces so that it supports us to not just function, but to thrive!
I use Reset Meditation processes to help with this. If you want to come into better whole brain being instead of jumping around your brain, e-mail me!
In total awe and respect for these body/brain systems we use to navigate life,
